چکیده

Language is a hallmark of intelligence, and endowing computers with the ability to analyze and generate languagea field of research known as Natural Language Processing (NLP)has been the dream of Artificial Intelligence (AI). In this paper we give a perspective of NLP from the point of view of ambiguity processing and computing under resource constraint. Language is fraught with ambiguity at all levels, be they morphemes, words, phrases, sentences or paragraphs. We first discuss these ambiguities with examples. Then we take a particular case of disambiguationword sense disambiguation (WSD)and discuss its solution in the face of multilinguality and resource constraint, namely, scarcity of annotated data. Multilinguality is one of the powerful instruments of leveraging shared resource.

Can multilinguality improve Biomedical Word Sense Disambiguation?

Ambiguity in the biomedical domain represents a major issue when performing Natural Language Processing tasks over the huge amount of available information in the field. For this reason, Word Sense Disambiguation is critical for achieving accurate systems able to tackle complex tasks such as information extraction, summarization or document classification. In this work we explore whether multil...

Language Independent Methodologies to Tackle Multilinguality

Until now, Natural Language Processing (NLP) research development has mainly been conducted for the English speaking community. However, the European Union with its 25 member-states already involves 22 different official languages. As a consequence, multilinguality is certainly the most important challenge of this century for the European NLP community. In this paper, we show how the Centre for...

بررسی رابطه تحمل ابهام و توانش زبانی

Present study attempts to find the relationship between tolerance of ambiguity and the students' language proficiency. To this aim, 135 students were randomly selected among Shahed University students. Subjects took a CELT (A Standard Language Proficiency Test) and filled the MacLain's (1993) Second Language Tolerance of Ambiguity questionnaire. They were divided into two groups of low and high...

Researching (Non) Fluent L2 Speakers’ Oral Communication Deficiencies: A Psycholinguistic Perspective

Fluency in a second language (L2) involves a quintessentially cognitive processing system that operates quickly and effectively. The perceived importance of researching fluency through a psycholinguistic lens has motivated the related L2 research to resort to current cognitive speaking-specific models. This study, drawing on Levelt’s (1999a) psycholinguistic model, probed the deficiency sources...

Relative Clause Ambiguity Resolution in L1 and L2: Are Processing Strategies Transferred?

This study aims at investigating whether Persian native speakers highly advanced in English as a second language (L2ers) can switch to optimal processing strategies in the languages they know and whether working memory capacity (WMC) plays a role in this respect. To this end, using a self-paced reading task, we examined the processing strategies 62 Persian speaking proficient L2ers used to read...
